British sailors in the 1700’s would get blackened gums, bleeding, and ultimately would die from scurvy. Today it is easy to get your vitamin C from citrus fruits and multivitamins.The amount needed to prevent scurvy is only 20 milligrams while the Recommended Dietary Allowance or RDA is 90 milligrams to encourage more fruit and vegetable intake. Humans and guinea pigs are among the few species that don’t make vitamin C. The genes were inactivated in evolution since there was so much vitamin C in a Plant-based Diet!
