Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for bone health but also for immune function and controlling inflammation. Vitamin D is made in the skin when exposed to sunshine and is found in dairy products fortified with vitamins A and D, in fish and cod liver oil, and in supplements with 1000 to 5000 IU per capsule in oil. Vitamin D like vitamin A goes into body fat so up to half of overweight and obese people are vitamin D deficient. In 2010 the recommended amounts of vitamin were increased to 2000 IU per day and 2 to 3 times as much is recommended for obese individuals.
