Phytonutrients are different than vitamins. While Phytonutrients play important roles in the body, removing them from the diet is not fatal as occurs in animals with vitamins. Lutein is a Phytonutrient that is concentrated in the back of the eye in an area called the macula that gets the most ultraviolet light. It protects the area from damage by light. Lutein is concentrated in the optic nerve and in the brain. Lutein helps support vision and Brain Health. Lutein is found in green vegetables like Kale, Spinach, and Avocados. Lutein supplements are made from marigold flowers. You should get 10 milligrams per day from green foods like spinach or supplements. It is fat soluble so add a little olive oil and cook leafy vegetable like kale or spinach. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and get an eye exam once a year to protect your eyes.
