CARNITINE is needed to burn fat for energy. It is found in highest concentration in the muscles where it is critical in getting fatty acids with 16 or more carbons into the energy factories of the cell called the Mitochondria. These energy factories in all the cells of the body have their own genetic material called DNA which you inherit only from your mother. An enzyme called acyl carnitine transferase acts to transport fatty acids from the fats we eat to where they can be burned for energy. We make carnitine in our bodies so it is not a vitamin. Supplements do not help with either sports performance or weight loss and deficiency is rare. Red meat is the richest dietary source, but it is found in a wide variety of foods so you don't need to eat high fat red meats to get carnitine.
