Even these food sources do not meet the choline required of 550 mg per day for men and 425 mg/day for women.Choline was not classified as a vitamin, because it can be synthesized in the body from phosphatidyl choline. The enzyme that makes choline in this way, is stimulated by estrogen so women are protected from deficiency during pregnancy and up until menopause. Choline deficiency increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. While deficiency disease marked by fatty liver disease and muscle damage is uncommon, recommended intakes are not achieved through diet alone. Pregnant women in particular need choline as the baby consumes the mother's choline depleting blood levels in the mother's blood. This is one case where supplementation is clearly healthier than trying to get what you need from a diet of eggs and red meat!!
