Herbal Fact #12: COENZYME Q10 is found in all cells of the body as part of the energy factories of the cells called Mitochondria. By itingwu12 on July 13, 2017 • ( 0 ) View this post on Instagram COENZYME Q10 is found in all cells of the body as part of the energy factories of the cells called Mitochondria. Mitochondria convert nutrients including glucose and fatty acids into the energy currency of the body called ATP (adenosine triphophate). As the energy is needed to drive thousands of enzymes in the body and to power muscle movements, one phosphate is removed and the energy of that chemical bond is released for use by the body. CoenzymeQ10 is also known as ubiquinone since it is found in all cells of the body (ubiquitous) but the heart and muscles have the highest concentrations of coenzymeQ10 where it powers muscle cells. Meat and fish are the richest sources of Coenzyme Q10. In patients who take statins to lower cholesterol, the synthesis of Coenzyme Q10 is also inhibited as it is formed in the same pathway as cholesterol. It is taken both to prevent the muscle pain associated with taking statins and to help maintain healthy heart functioning. It is sold as a supplement and as an ingredient in heart healthy supplements in order to nourish the energy-producing cells of the body.
