CRANBERRIES can help prevent urinary tract infections, but you will find a lot of controversy in different publications. Cranberries are grown mostly in the U.S. and Eastern Canada and were named cranberry since the vines looked like the neck of a crane. Early American settlers called them "craneberrries". The berries are red when ripe and grow on short spreading vines and most are harvested by flooding into what is called a bog which makes it easy to separate the berries from their vines. They are grown mostly in the U.S. In Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In nursing home residents Dr. Jerome Ritvo did a classic study showing that urinary tract infections were reduced in elderly women drinking cranberry juice. In addition to vitamin C, flavonoids, and flavanols, cranberry fruit contains a special type A proanthocyanidin or PAC. Dr.Amy Howell has shown in her lab that the PAC gets in between bacteria known to cause urine infections and the cells of the bladder wall. Cranberry extracts containing PAC's and cranberry juice can be used to help prevent urine infections which occur mostly in women. If you have symptoms of a bladder infection, you need antibiotics, water, and medication to reduce bladder pain. Cranberry does not work at that point accounting for the confusing research results examining the effects of cranberry on urine infections. Women with frequent bladder infections need to consume the cranberry PACs before an infection develops. Like other herbals, the cranberry provides natural support of bladder health but it is not an antibiotic.
