They are part of who you are genetically because 99% of your genetic material is part of your bacteria. There are only 23,000 human genes, but there are two million (2,000,000) bacterial genes in and on your body. The gut bacteria eat what your body does not digest and that food makes some bacteria grow more than others. Think of these bacteria as a jungle of plants competing for food. The bacteria change throughout the day and night as the food they see changes, and they reflect the diets eaten by different people around the world. Each person has their own microbiome. This was discovered in the last ten years, and has been called the forgotten organ. Children living in Europe have very different species of bacteria than children living in rural Africa as shown in the circular graph above. In the next part of this series, you will learn how obesity affects the microbiome. Once again, you are what you eat, when it comes to the microbiome!!
