Supplements #4: PROTEIN BALANCE is the science behind our protein philosophy of 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body or 2 grams per kilogram lean body mass per day.

PROTEIN BALANCE is the science behind our protein philosophy of 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body or 2 grams per kilogram lean body mass per day. Remember protein is made of amino acids which have nitrogen. On average 6.25 gram of protein will have 1 gram of nitrogen. You can estimate the nitrogen in the diet and measure urea nitrogen in urine. If there is more nitrogen in the urine, it indicates there is enough protein in the diet. Sedentary men need 0.8 g/kg body wt/day. Athletes need 1.0 grams while weight lifters need 2.0. Looking at this, I decided it is the amount of LEAN NOT WEIGHT that determines protein needs. So if a woman has 100 pounds or about 50 kg of lean body or fat-free mass, she needs 100 g of protein per day regardless of her body weight. As she loses weight, exercise and protein help keep the lean as she loses the fat. Most men need more based on their lean body mass estimate on a BMI chart or Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) measurement.
