FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS provide your body with two important fatty acids that have benefits for heart health, brain health, and eye health – EPA (eicosapentanoic acid with 20 carbons) and DHA (docosahexanoic acid with 22 carbons). ALA (alpha linolenic acid with 18 carbons) is found in many plant foods including flax seed oil. While fish can convert ALA to DHA and EPA efficiently, humans do not. It is important to get DHA and EPA from fish oil supplements. DHA is found in Algae and vegans and strict vegetarians take DHA capsules. DHA has benefits for brain health. EPA has benefits for heart health. The body converts 29% of DHA to EPA so even vegans get both DHA and EPA from a DHA capsule. In order to get the maximum benefit from fish oil supplements, reduce the hidden fats which are Omega-6 fatty acids such as linoleic acid from corn oil and other vegetable oils. Linoleic acid gets converted to arachidonic acid which counteracts the beneficial effects of fish oil supplements. Reduce overall fat intake from processed foods and use olive oil in cooking to get the most benefit from your fish oil supplements.
