Supplements #18: GREEN TEA EXTRACT releases fat from fat cells and helps you lose weight and keep it off.

GREEN TEA EXTRACT releases fat from fat cells and helps you lose weight and keep it off. The supplement as a powder or capsule is made from green tea leaves. Both green tea and black tea extracts are made from leaves of the same tea tree called Camelia sinensis. Green tea leaves are steamed or heated which inactivates certain enzymes in the cells of the leaf called oxidases so that the leaves stay green instead of turning brown. The green tea leaves are then extracted in hot water just as you would brew tea at home. By using water extraction the normal balance of Phytonutrients in the tea leaf is preserved. An antioxidant family of related compounds called catechins include EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG is the most powerful member of the catechins which include EGC, EC, ECG, C, GCG, and CG. While EGCG is the most powerful antioxidant, the proper balance of all the catechins is important for the best effects on metabolism. Normally about 10% to 20% of catechins are EGCG and there is a balance of the other catechins. Green tea extract also contains caffeine. It is important to get a water extract of green tea since alcohol and other chemical extractions lead to high EGCG out of balance with the other catechins. In cells, animals and humans green tea catechins release fat from fat cells. Both caffeine and the catechins cause loss of abdominal fat when combined with diet and exercise in humans as shown in the graph. There are many clinical studies showing green tea helps maintain weight after weight loss. The catechins are also antioxidants that help protect the body.
