24 HOUR NUTRITION AND SLEEP are linked together. Every night as you sleep your brain regenerates its energy. As you sleep you enter different stages with the deepest sleep associated with rapid eye movements called R.E.M. Sleep. This is when you dream and it typically occurs around 2AM. If you don't get this type of sleep, your 24 hour cycle is disturbed and you will suffer all the problems of poor sleep including increased appetite, fatigue, and an increased risk for obesity and overweight. Insufficient sleep leads to increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol the next day as well as increases in insulin and ghrelin hormones which increase appetite. Fatigue also can lead to increased eating as you try to gain energy. There are many reasons for poor sleep including stress, late night eating, and too much computer work or television. There are things you can do such as having an evening shake or night snack enriched in protein and tryptophan. Stop eating 2 hours before bed and stop computer, phone, and television 1 hour before bed.
