BICEPS AND TRICEPS are the "show off" or "shirt-filler" muscles for men while women like a slimmer fit look with some definition of the muscles. These two muscles get their names from the number of visible muscle heads in each. The biceps have two which you see and the triceps have three which you usually don't see. To build muscle, you need to stretch the muscle and pull the sarcomeres made of actin and myosin apart to set up a small injury which then brings new cells to merge with your muscle and make it grow. It is the downward movement in the biceps curl and the upward move in the triceps press-down that creates this stretch in what is called an eccentric movement. When you work the muscle to exhaustion, you will have some soreness for 24 to 48 hours which is normal delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS.
