NUTRITION HOW’S #19: HOW TO USE SPORTS DRINKS ? Sports drinks have become increasingly popular over the past few years as fitness and a Healthy Active Lifestyle have become more widespread throughout the world. What should you be drinking when you are exercising? The original sports drinks developed in the 1970’s have too much sugar, calories, and a patented mix of bicarbonate meant to balance acid production. The bicarbonate is totally unnecessary as you breathe out carbon dioxide during exercise which keeps your blood pH (acid to base) perfectly balanced for most exercise other than the end of a 26 mile marathon run. At low levels of exercise such as watching football or planning to exercise you don’t need anything other than water. At moderate levels of exercise for one hour, a Sports Drink can help you stay hydrated and avoid fatigue. Choose a drink with less than 50 calories of sugar along with sodium and other electrolytes. The glucose in the drink helps to transport sodium and water into your bloodstream to keep you well-hydrated. If you are going to exercise at more than 65% of your maximum heart rate for one hour or more as athletes do playing professional basketball or football, then you need a higher calorie Sports Drink with 100 Calories, sodium, magnesium and other electrolytes to replace what is lost in your sweat especially in hot and humid climates. The glucose in Sports Drinks helps to maintain the carbohydrate energy stores in your muscle called glycogen and the fluid helps maintain blood flow to your muscles. So get addicted to having your Sports Drink, exercise clothes, music, and towel ready for your next session at the gym or on the playing field and remember…Exercise is the only healthy addiction, but you have to do it to get the benefit – you can’t just sit around and watch somebody else doing it !! #drdavidheber #sportsdrink #bloodsugar #exercise #hydration to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com
