Fibers include cellulose, pectin, guar gum, chitin, beta-glucan, hemicellulose, and lignans among others. Fibers that are not digested in the small intestine are digested by the microbiome bacteria in the colon. Some fibers like cellulose are not digested at all and pass out of the body unchanged. The indigestible fibers help the intestines move by stretching the smooth muscles of the intestine which stimulates them to contract. Soluble fibers like pectin from apples and other fruits settle in the stoach which slows stomach emptying creating a feeling of fullness. Some soluble fibers like beta-glucan absorb fats and can bind cholesterol. Remember to get 25 to 30 grams of fiber from fruits and vegetables as well as a fiber supplement every day to keep your bowels regular. Fibers are carbohydrates and they are an important part of Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!!#drdavidheber #fiber #digestion #carbohydrates #carbs to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com A post shared by Dr. David Heber (@drdavidheber) on Oct 15, 2017 at 5:01am PDT Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading...‹ NUTRITION WHY’S #12: CARBOHYDRATE DIGESTION- Carbohydrates are digested in the mouth, stomach, small intestine, and colon depending on their structure.NUTRITION WHY’S #14: CARBOHYDRATE AND YOUR MICROBIOME – Carbohydrates that are not completely digested and absorbed into the bloodstream in the 22 feet of small intestine are digested by the bacteria in the colon where the largest number of bacteria in the Microbiome exist. ›Categories: Nutrition
