NUTRITION WHY'S #2: PROTEIN AND BODY FAT- The protein in your diet and your muscle-building exercises affect your body fat by determining how many calories you burn. The amount of protein in your body in muscles and organs called the lean body mass or fat-free mass (FFM) on body composition machines (Tanita or other Bioimpedance Analyzers) determines how many calories you burn at rest. If you don't get the right amount of protein which is 1 gram per pound of lean body mass or 2 pounds per kilogram of lean body mass each day divided among your meals, your lean body mass will go down. Sedentary lifestyle causes the muscles to decrease in size and strength increasing the risk of joint and back pain. This can happen at any age, but typically happens in middle age between 30 and 50 years of age with a loss of 25 to 30 percent of muscle mass. When the number of calories you burn at rest goes down, you can gain weight as body fat even if you eat the same number of calories you always have eaten. Now those calories are more than your body needs due to loss of calorie-burning muscle. Having Protein-Rich Shakes for breakfast and within 30 minutes to one hour after your exercise as part of a planned exercise habit daily and a Healthy Active Lifestyle can help you maintain muscle, reduce fat, and keep the shape you want at any age!!#drdavidheber #protein #fat #exercise #aging #muscle to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com
