Fats also enter the skin from the blood stream and from fats applied to the outer layers of the skin with skin creams. Getting healthy fats to the outer layers of the skin is important since there are 14 layers of dead cells called the stratum corneum which depend on fats as a barrier to prevent drying of the skin and wrinkling. Balancing your omega-3 and omega-6 fats by reducing your intake of processed snack foods with hidden fats while eating fish or taking supplements of fish or algae oil every day will help reduce redness and irritation which is common with dry skin especially in the winter when the air is dry. Antioxidants like beta-carotene and Vitamin E are deposited in the fat and contribute to healthy looking smooth skin. The color of the skin is changed by eating colorful fruits and vegetables which have a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fats along with fat soluble antioxidants like the orange tone of beta- carotene from carrots or the red tone of lycopene from tomato products. The skin is the largest organ in the body and a Healthy Active Lifestyle will increase blood flow to the skin when you exercise and carry healthy nutrients to the skin. Along with fats, protein is an important building block for healthy skin. Recent studies show that better facial skin appearance is associated with healthy aging measured in blood testing between the ages of 20 and 38.
