NUTRITION WHY’S #23: CARBS, FATS, AND PROTEIN While your body can convert carbs to fats and even extra protein to fats, there is a way to manage your body fat whether you want to lose weight or just be your personal best shape by eating protein, fats, and carbs in the right way. First, eat protein in the amount that matches your lean body mass (measured or estimated by Body Mass Index) at 1 gram per pound of lean body mass. Second, eat as little fat as possible (about 20% of calories) when losing weight so your body will burn fat and exercise to burn more fat. Eat the right amount of omega-3 from fish or fish oil supplements. Third, eat the right carbs from plant sources not refined carbs which are converted easily to fat. There is one time where you need extra refined carbs and that is during prolonged exercise when you burn 91% of energy from fat and the carbs help preserve muscle energy stored as the starch called glycogen.
