NUTRITION WHY’S #33: WHY CHOLINE ? Choline also known as vitamin B4 is important for brain health, and in protecting your DNA together with folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. It is part of acetylcholine, a key signaling substance in the brain which is sometimes low in dementia. Choline was left out of our list of B vitamins because it can be made in the liver from another chemical Phospho-ethanolamine (PEM) The enzyme (PEMT) which carries out this reaction is protected in women and goes up during pregnancy, because Choline just like folate is critical for brain development in the unborn baby in the uterus. Men with a gene variant called TT in the MTHFR gene which occurs in 10% of men need choline in their diet since deficiency can cause fatty liver. In 1998, the recommended amount of Choline was set at 550 milligrams per day. 90% of Americans do not get this in their diet since the major sources are liver and eggs with much less in most other foods including fruits and vegetables. You need Choline from both your diet and supplements. This is a vitamin for brain health that is part of Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!! Remember to have your Protein-Rich Shake which is fortified with vitamins and minerals every day and then take a Multivitamin along with a Balanced Diet and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!! #drdavidheber #vitamins #choline #brainhealth to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com
