NUTRITION WHYS #4: PROTEIN AND IMMUNITY- Protein is vital in maintaining immune function. When lean body mass is reduced, there is a greater risk of infection associated with decreased activity of your immune system. Simple starvation leads to death through failure of the immune system and organ failure when your body protein is less than 50% of its normal level. More commonly, increased abdominal fat is associated with stimulation of the immune system due to changes in the Microbiome and the signals sent to the immune system by dying fat cells in the abdomen as they are attacked by the immune cells. You need protein to maintain the barrier between the villi in your intestine and the intestinal contents. If this barrier breaks down, the immune system is stimulated. 70% of the immune system is located around the intestines and the healthy bacteria in the microbiome help to protect the immune system. Malnutrition and certain infections of the intestines with toxic bacteria leads to changes in the Microbiome that stimulate and then deplete the immune response. Adequate protein at every meal will maintain your lean body mass protein so that if you are ever injured or infected, your immune system will be better able to withstand challenges. Protein also helps maintain your weight and together with exercise can keep your abdominal fat from increasing. Both ends of the nutrition spectrum affect immune function. Starvation impairs immune function but infections and obesity stimulate immune cells and increase the risks for many diseases. Overweight and obesity due to inadequate protein and sedentary lifestyle lead to weight gain and increased abdominal fat with overstimulation of immune cells and increased risk of age-related diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and common forms of cancer. Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active lifestyle including Protein-Rich Shakes to reach your personal protein goal each day are important for all your organs, your body fat, your muscle protein, your intestines, and your immune system!! #drdavidheber #immunity#protein #infection #starvation#obesity
