NUTRITION WHY’S #42: WHY MANGANESE ? Manganese is in the structure of the most important enzyme neutralizing the oxygen radicals released by mitochondria when they are converting food to energy. Oxygen radicals are single atoms of Oxygen that are not paired with another Oxygen atom as they are in stable Oxygen gas in the air we breathe. Oxygen radicals with an extra electron are highly reactive and are usually carefully handled by enzymes using this energy for many metabolic reactions. Free oxygen radicals are very dangerous and can damage cells throughout the body and the skin causing premature aging. Superoxide Dismutase includes Manganese in its structure and a specific gene activates its formation. It converts the Oxygen radical to hydrogen peroxide, an ingredient in hair color that bleaches hair before color is added. The RDA for men is 2.3 milligrams per day and for women it is 1.8 milligrams per day. Manganese is found in nuts, clams, mussels, roasted pumpkin, cocoa powder, squash, sunflower seeds, flax, chili powder, and sesame seeds. If you don’t eat these, Manganese is also found in Multivitamins, the best guarantee for getting everything you need every day from Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!! Next time I will discuss another enzyme called Glutathione Peroxidase then converts this to water completing the critical antioxidant reactions. #drdavidheber #manganese #multivitamins #oxygen #aging to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com
