NUTRITION WHY'S #6: ALTERNATIVE PROTEINS are unusual plant-based proteins that include amaranth, chia, hemp, flax, and millet. These seem like important new discoveries but they are not. Soy protein is still the best protein in the plant world with the right combination of amino acids. The amino acids in a protein determine its quality score. Animal studies were used to determine protein quality, but human digestion of proteins is different than rats so in 1992 a score was developed that included the digestibility of the protein in the score. The highest possible score is 1.0 which is the score that soy protein gets along with egg white and whey. It is the only plant protein that gets a score of 1.0. All of the alternative proteins get scores between 0.58 and 0.76. You can combine different low scoring proteins as vegetarians and vegans have always done. For example, rice and beans can combine to have a higher PDCAAS than beans or rice alone. Nut proteins combine with rice or corn in a similar way. If you are vegetarian or vegan, get as much of your protein from soy protein isolate as possible and then use firm tofu, and tempeh derived from soy. Combine known combination like rice and beans or corn and beans before relying on a protein that is new to you. If you buy a combination of alternative proteins in a product make sure that you know the PDCAAS score or make that product a minor part of your daily protein needs. You see lots of vegetarians with small muscles . One reason is the poor quality of the proteins they are eating so they are unable to build muscle effectively. Stick with soy and don't believe that it is an estrogen- it is not. To build muscle have a soy protein or whey protein shake within 30 minutes to 1 hour after resistance exercises targeting specific muscles and follow a Balanced Nutrition and Healthy Active Lifestyle plan the rest of the day beginning with a Protein-Rich Shake for breakfast every day!!! #drdavidheber #protein #quinoa #hemp #chiaseeds #whey #soy to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalife nutrition institute.com
