PERSONALIZATION #4: PERSONALIZED RESPONSES TO MANY FOODS- Last time, I discussed a study showing that individual responses of blood sugar to two different breads (whole grain vs. white) were consistent in the same individual over time but different between people. Israeli researchers did a similar study in over 1000 people looking at individual glucose responses to 800 different foods. Again, individual responses to each food were consistent but there were significant differences between people. The researchers collected information on the subjects including blood tests, typical food intake diaries, their Microbiome, their genes, physical activity and lifestyle. They used all this information to develop a computer program that could predict the blood glucose responses to 800 foods. Then they selected 100 subjects put into three coditions: usual diet, a diet plan developed by using the computer, or a diet developed by clinical experts. The computer-generated diet and the expert diet were equally good at lowering blood sugar levels and they were better than the usual diet. This is the largest study of its kind and shows the power of information and computers to help control blood sugar. With sensors of blood glucose already available that you can put on your skin, it may be possible to design personalized diets for lowering blood sugar and slowing or preventing the development of many common chronic disease including type 2 diabetes. Next time, I will explain why controlling blood sugar is so important for anyone with a family history of diabetes.
