PERSONALIZATION #9: GENETICS OF OBESITY? For the first time in human history there are more overweight and obese people than underweight people in the world. In the U.S. 2/3 of the population is overweight or obese and the problem is growing around the world in all humans regardless of ethnicity, culture, or gender. So overweight and obesity cannot be simply a genetic disease. There have been 100 genes associated with obesity with different functions in many organs including the regions of the brain controlling temperature, hunger and fullness, and storage or burning of calories by fat cells. Almost all of the genes have their observed effects on body weight reduced by Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle. Common obesity is called polygenic because many genes are involved and only in rare cases can a single gene cause obesity. There are individual differences in where you deposit fat in the body, which foods you crave, how you respond to caffeine, and the distribution of your muscles. I will discuss some of these genes in the next few posts, so stay tuned! Unlike eye color or hair color which are inherited in a simple fashion, the action of genes for obesity are affected by diet and lifestyle from the time you are in your mother’s womb through old age. The good news is that Balanced Nutrition and Healthy Active Lifestyle will help you achieve your best personal shape!! #drdavidheber #obesity #body fat #genetics to learn more read “Personalized Nutrition and Transformation” by Heber and Bowerman and go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com
