PERSONALIZATION #12: FTO GENE AND OBESITY- While many different gene variants called SNP’s (single nucleotide polymorphisms) in which the genetic code is changed have been associated with obesity, the variants of one gene are most common. One half of the world’s population has at least one SNP of the FTO gene and these gene changes are thought to play a causal role in 22% of all cases of obesity in the world. The gene make a protein in the hypothalamus at the base of the brain in the area controlling food intake and body temperature. As with all genes related to obesity, they evolved as part of the adaptation to starvation which involved conserving fat and lowering body temperature to conserve calories. Exposed to a modern high fat/high sugar diet, these genes lead to overweight and obesity. There are 19 different SNP’s identified and six of these are the most strongly associated with obesity. However, even when these SNP’s are present the degree of overweight is affected by how much exercise and physical activity a person is doing. As I have emphasized in all the posts on genetics of obesity, these genes only indicate a risk for obesity, through Balanced Nutrition and Healthy Active Lifestyle you can still achieve your best personal shape !! #drdavidheber #genetics #obesity to learn more read “PERSONALIZED NUTRITION AND TRANSFORMATION” by Heber and Bowerman avaiable on Amazon.com for $5.49 and go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com
