FAT FACTS #3: HOW FAT CELLS GROW- Fat cells are part of the fat organ made up of blood vessels and immune cells. When you eat more calories than you burn, the extra calories are stored as fat. Carbohydrates and Protein foods are broken down to glucose and amino acids and fats travel to the fat cells as triglycerides. Glucose enters the fat cell and is converted from 6 carbons to 3 making two glycerol molecules. The glycerol is combined with the fatty acids to make triglycerides again or stored fat. 95% of the fat you eat and the fat in your body is made up of triglycerides. Beyond the fat cell, your fat organs in the abdomen, under the skin, and in your hips and thighs grow by activating cells called Stem Cells. These cells can develop into many kinds of cells in the body but in the fat, they form more fat cells. As the cells grow the Stem Cells can become blood vessel cells to supply oxygen and form membranes of protein and connective tissue made of a protein called collagen from amino acids. The fat cell can secrete hormones and other proteins and is not simply a bag of fat!! Your personal fat shape and amount is based on your genes and your diet and lifestyle.
