FAT FACTS #8 : CAFFEINE AND THE FAT CELL- Caffeine is a natural substance made by plants to defend themselves. It is also a Phytonutrient because it has beneficial effects on your body. It improves all aspects of brain health including memory, mood, attention, and thinking ability. When you are cutting calories, it restores your energy, and when you are exercising, it helps you perform better by releasing fatty acids from the fat cell which can be burned for energy by your muscles. So coffee is both a diet aid and a sports performance booster. It also activates your sympathetic nervous system which increases pulse rate and sweating. As you drink more coffee, your liver produces more enzymes to clear the coffee from your body and excrete it in the urine. The best way to get caffeine is in tea as it has few calories and about 40 milligrams of caffeine. Gourmet coffees have more caffeine but can bring along 600 Calories or more. If you have never had coffee start out with a small amount and build up slowly. The upper limit of caffeine that you should have per day according to the US Food and Drug Administration is 400 milligrams. So be careful with some of those energy drinks that have too much caffeine. Have your caffeine-containing safe tea every day with your Protein-Rich shake as your brain is expecting it and you will feel tired without your caffeine.
