FAT FACTS: SPECIAL POST- WHAT ARE KETONE BODIES? Ketone bodies are formed in the liver from fatty acids released by fat cells. Ketone bodies enable the body to burn fat rather than glucose overnight while you sleep and during starvation. By using energy from fat the body reduces the breakdown of muscle from 75 grams per day to 20 grams per day. This change to burning fat enables humans to survive 6 months with adequate fluid, minerals, and vitamins rather than just 30 days. The ketone bodies go up in the blood 100 fold over 6 weeks of starvation, but are also detectable after an overnight fast during sleep. Ketogenic diets are hard to follow, because you have to eat healthy oils and meats with <5% of calories from carbs. This diet is used for epilepsy in children resistant to medications but half of these children cannot follow it for more than 6 months. This diet has been touted for weight loss but you don’t need to cut out healthy carbs like fruits and vegetables in order to lose weight and I don’t recommend the Ketone Diet. Ketones don’t suppress hunger. There is no advantage to skipping breakfast before working out trying to burn more fat and it may cause fatigue. So have a Protein-Rich Shake about 1 Hour before you work out for breakfast and then have another 30 minute to 1 hour after exercise. You don’t need fruity breath to burn fat as the muscles use both glucose and fatty acids as fuels for energy.
