HAPPINESS #2: HAPPINESS AND MEANING: What makes people happy? A Happiness Index based on a survey of 155 countries found that personal freedom, health, generosity, social support , income, and trustworthy governance were most important. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden were ranked the highest, and the U.S. came in 14th. While these averages for countries are interesting, what makes you happy personally depends on you and not your surroundings. Dr. Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist who was able to survive horrible conditions in a concentration camp in the second World War by having a personal purpose and finding meaning in his life. As a result of his experiences, he wrote a famous book “Man’s Search for Meaning” and founded the field of psychiatry called logotherapy to help people find meaning in their lives. A key principle of Positive Psychology is finding your “Why” or purpose recently made popular in a TED talk and book by Simon Sinek. This is the same concept as Meaning by another name. Being independent and healthy while also secure in your income and trusting that you will be treated fairly are all important as is giving back and being grateful and generous. Each other fathers factors are important.
