HAPPINESS #6: RELAXATION By laurent514 on December 20, 2019 • ( 0 ) View this post on Instagram HAPPINESS #6: RELAXATION To be truly happy, you have to take time to take care of yourself each day. Sleep is the most effective way to recharge your brain, but there may be nights where you don’t get enough sleep or you may be having one of those days where there is just too much to get done. Dr. Herbert Benson, at Harvard Medical School popularized the idea of The Relaxation Response based on his research showing that relaxing could reduce stress and lower blood pressure and pulse. Follow the Circle on the slide: 1) Sit Quietly and close the door or find a private spot; 2) Relax your muscles from head to toe or toe to head by contracting and relaxing each muscle. This is called progressive muscle relaxation; 3) Focus on your breathing; 4) Breathe deeply; and 5) Think of a relaxing image like ocean waves going back and forth. Just 20 minutes of sitting quietly can recharge your mind. This is a good way to get to sleep at night if your having trouble getting to sleep or getting back to sleep when you wake up in the middle of the night. During the day, rest while relaxing without going into a deep sleep or you may wake up tired. Done correctly, relaxing can be a great tool. The Relaxation Response is a great addition to your program of Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle.
