PHYTONUTRIENTS #4: THE YELLOW-ORANGE GROUP- The many different Citrus fruits we eat today are all derived from crossing the Citron (the original lemon), the Mandarin Orange, and the Pomelo (a kind of grapefruit). These fruits make up the Yellow-Orange Group. These delicious fruits contribute Vitamin C and Citrus Flavonoids to the diet. Humans, Primates like the Chimpanzee, Apes and Gorillas have all lost the genes needed to make vitamin C since it was so abundant in the ancient plant-based diet on which we evolved over millions of years. It is a key antioxidant in the body and these fruits are a rich source you should include in your diet every day. While Vitamin C is a phytonutrient from these fruits you also get a family of Citrus Flavonoids in the juice, the fruit pulp, and in the peel. If you squeeze the peel, you will see a little fluid spray out. This fluid contains Geraniol and Limonene, fat soluble flavors added to juice to give it that fresh-squeezed taste and you can zest the peel and add it to many different recipes from fish to yogurt to add a citrus flavor. The pith of the fruits provide fiber and you get some if this whenever you eat the fruits or have juice that contains the peel. If you are watching your weight, limit the amount of juice you drink since they naturally contain the sugar made of glucose and fructose. It takes two and a a half oranges to make an 8 ounce (240 ml) glass of juice which adds 112 Calories to your diet. So eat these delicious fruits of the Yellow-Orange family!! Next time I will talk about the Yellow-Green Group important for your vision and your brain-So stay tuned!! #drdavidheber #citrus #vitaminc #juice #orange #lemon #grapefruit to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and www.herbalifenutritioninstitute.com and read PERSONALIZED NUTRITION AND TRANSFORMATION available as an e-book on Amazon.com for $5.49
